
Critical Application Migration to the Cloud
Overview:
This project focuses on the seamless and secure migration of a critical business application from an on-premises data center to a public cloud platform (AWS or Azure). The goal is to perform a "Lift and Shift" migration with minimal downtime and zero data loss. The project includes a full-lifecycle approach, from detailed planning and risk assessment to final validation and post-migration support.
Key Deliverables:
- Detailed Assessment & Planning
- In-depth Dependency Mapping: A comprehensive map of all application servers (web, database, file share) and their dependencies, including internal and external systems like Active Directory, DNS, and any third-party APIs. The result is a detailed architectural diagram of the current environment.
- Performance Analysis: A report on CPU, RAM, and disk usage collected over a 30-day period to accurately size the new cloud instances, ensuring optimal performance and cost-efficiency.
- Risk Assessment & Rollback Strategy: A formal document outlining all potential risks (e.g., unexpected data loss, downtime) and a step-by-step plan to revert to the on-premises environment in case of any unexpected issues during the cutover.
- Technical Execution & Pilot Migration:
- Server & OS Migration: Using automated tools (e.g., AWS MGN or Azure Migrate) to replicate the on-premises server images (including the OS, applications, and configurations) to the cloud as new virtual machines.
- Database Migration with Zero-Downtime: Utilizing specialized services (e.g., AWS Database Migration Service or Azure DMS) to perform a continuous, real-time replication of the on-premises database to the new cloud database, minimizing downtime during the final switch.
- Staging Environment & Comprehensive Testing: Setting up a full staging environment in the cloud identical to the production environment. A full suite of functional, performance, and security tests will be run to validate the migrated application.
- Final Cutover & Post-Migration Support:
- Final Cutover & DNS Switch: Executing the final cutover during the agreed-upon maintenance window, including redirecting traffic via a DNS switch to the new cloud servers.
- Go-Live Validation & Monitoring: A detailed checklist and real-time monitoring of the new cloud environment to ensure all services are fully operational and performing as expected immediately after the cutover.
- Post-Migration Documentation & Handover: Providing a complete project summary, an updated architectural diagram of the new cloud environment, and a detailed handover document for the client's internal IT team, ensuring they can manage the new infrastructure effectively.
